NEWBURY — Select Board discussed fire station lease dispute with Protection Fire Company No. 1. The town pays $90,000 annually for 50 percent of the Byfield Fire Station, but negotiations have stalled after Pro 1 rejected two tentative agreements. Fire Chief David Evans noted six full-time firefighters cover the town's 26.4 square miles.
The board approved multiple one-day entertainment licenses and appointed Annabelle Svahn to the Historical Commission. Town Administrator Tracy Blais reported that Fire Chief Evans will retire November 2, and a Citizens Petition requires calling a Special Town Meeting within 45 days.
