Newbury Council on Aging reelects Jespersen as chair, tables a van-to-the-polls plan pending legal review. The committee voted unanimously Monday to return Damon Jespersen to the chair for fiscal year 2027, with Geraldine DiMaio as vice chair and Jeanine Cunningham as clerk. Members tabled a proposal to use the agency's van for rides to town meetings and elections until Director Cindy Currier meets with town counsel in August, citing concerns about disenfranchisement if the service isn't opened to all residents, not just seniors.
Select Board member Bill DiMaio, newly elected president of the Friends of the Newbury Council on Aging, said the nonprofit raises only $3,500 to $4,000 a year and is aiming for "$3,500 to become $20,000" to keep pace with the center's needs. Currier also reported the town is pursuing a new "crossover SUV" to supplement its van and NEET volunteer rides.
