Newbury officials tell state lawmakers school funding model is unsustainable

NEWBURY — Three small towns told state legislators their education funding model is unsustainable. Newbury Select Board Vice Chair Alicia Greco and Finance Committee Chair Erica Jacobsen told State Senator Bruce Tarr and Representatives Kristin Kassner and Dawne Shand that Triton Regional School District's $57 million budget is over 80 percent funded by three communities whose residents cannot sustain higher taxes. Jacobsen noted that more than half of Newbury's budget goes to education while the state receives billions in additional revenue.
Tarr said over 270 Massachusetts school districts receive only minimum per-pupil aid, driven by a Chapter 70 formula that fails to account for special education, insurance, and inflation. ===BRIEF===
