Newbury Recreation Commission approves church field event for May

Recreation Commission · Meeting of February 2, 2026

Newbury Recreation Commission approves a Byfield church youth event on town fields, tables a storage request. The commission voted unanimously to let Byfield Parish Church use soccer field two starting at 4:30 p.m. on May 9 for "the bridge," a capture-the-flag and cardboard-fort event Christian Education Director Becky Murray said now draws more than 100 kids, calling it "a big capture the flag game" where flour-filled nylons "poof with kind of like gunpowder." Members also approved spring field use for lacrosse, Rush and Triton Youth Soccer, but tabled a separate Triton request to store equipment and sell concessions in the fieldhouse. The board flagged an unexplained nearly $4,000 charge under warrant VW-2604 and a $45,000 estimate to design a walking path around the fields.
